Party in the Pays de la Sagouine

A long winding footbridge leads to this tiny island in Bouctouche in the Canadian province of New Brunswick where joie de vivre is mandatory!

A "customs officer" filters access to this strange country that is the Ile-aux-Puces. Be careful, it is better to be prepared for anything!

How? 'Or' What ? You don't know who La Sagouine is? “She's just a cleaning lady. But also a card printer, and, sometimes, a woman of little virtue, ”explains mischievously Maria Gélas, the“ bootlegger ”who runs the bar on Flea Island.

A bar where it is good to taste a little mousse while listening to music even if the history of this fishing village dates back to the time of prohibition. The opportunity to taste, perhaps, a flacatoune, a home-made beer.
It is the writer Antonine Maillet who gave life to La Sagouine, this endearing woman with outspokenness.

On Île-aux-Puces, a (very small) museum is dedicated to Acadian playwright and novelist Antonine Maillet, born in Bouctouche in 1929.

His work has won numerous awards, including the Goncourt in 1979 for Pélagie-la-Charrette.
But it is probably his book La Sagouine which is the most successful. Slices of the life of this Acadian, who brings back the history of her country with earthy, relevant words but a lot of poetry. Every summer, for more than 25 years, she has animated this little imaginary country where life is good.

Other characters who have escaped straight from Antonine Maillet's books live on the island where they take visitors on a journey through time: Pumpkin, Comb, Pierre à Pitre, Ben à Bélonie or even the Quibblers, Zélica and Séraphine. Each time the two neighbors see each other the chicane pogne!

Facetious, they like to involve the public in their bickering. Among the hundred spectators, no idea why his choice fell on me. But, the ridiculous not killing, I let myself be drawn into this whirlwind of music and eccentric sketches. And then, making others laugh heartily is beautiful, isn't it? (video)
On the other hand, it's not easy to always understand the colorful and earthy language of the actors!

A few colorful wooden houses invite you to visit.
Among them, the shed in Gapi, this "gatherer" who collected a whole lot during these trips

The house of the saint

The barber shop

Without forgetting the lighthouse

In the Pays de la Sagouine, we care less about the history of the Acadians than about their culture. Music is everywhere there. With a little luck, you can even participate in a workshop to learn how to handle this funny spoon that allows you to beat the rhythm.

The season is punctuated by shows, concerts, dinner theater, theater for children. In the evening, it is with regret that we leave flea island! Fortunately, on dry land, the evening continues with all the musicians on the terrace at Hert.

Throughout the summer, it's a whirlwind of parties and music in this imaginary country in the town of Bouctouche!

The inhabitants will welcome you with open arms: “We are blessed with you, yeah! "

Well yes, the accent is not always easy to understand.
