Château Bas, classified as AOC Coteaux d'Aix, is built on a site deeply rooted in history. On its site was a Gallo-Roman city, evidenced by the remains of a temple erected in the 1st century BC and recognized among the 100 oldest monuments of Provence. Restored in the 17th century after a turbulent history, the castle, then intended for polyculture, housed vines, animals and olive trees.

Today, 75 hectares of vines planted on clay-limestone and sandy-loam hillsides are cultivated with respect for biodiversity and certified organic. They evolve on the lands of this “Tuscan Provence”.

Cairanne blanc 2020, Domaine Richaud, 17 euros – at wine merchants, in the estate’s tasting cellar on: 04 90 30 85 25

Marcel Richaud participated in the revival of the Cairanne appellation (north-west of Orange) and in particular in the classification as “Cru”, the 17th cru of the Côtes-du-Rhône. The history of Domaine Marcel Richaud begins at the end of the 1960s. The grapes then go straight to the cooperative cellar of Cairanne. When the young Marcel took over the family estate in 1974 at the age of 17, he had the firm intention of freeing himself from the cooperative and selling in bottles. From the vine to the cellar, Marcel Richaud is extremely demanding. For him, the raw material is the basis of everything: the harvest is carried out by a team of 30 people with grapes having maximum maturity, the sorting is severe to obtain an average yield of 35 ha/hl. The entire estate is certified organic.
