Stay in Metz, sleep in the king's pantry

Thick walls, straight and square lines: the imposing edifice clearly displays its military origin. Today it is home to an elegant hotel, the MGallery La Citadelle.

Its history dates back to the 16th century, when François de Scépeaux, Marshal of France, built the fortress of Metz. To feed the 600 or so soldiers in the garrison, he erected, next to the arsenal, a large-scale food store to store wheat, salt or even wine: 125 m long, 38 m wide, it offered a storage area of 6000 m²!

More than 500 years after its construction, when much of the fortress has disappeared, the old food store still stands, testifying to the importance of the old stronghold. In 1969, the building was restored to civilian life and classified as a historic monument. If the nearby arsenal now houses the musical city, the former pantry of the king's armies has finally been transformed into a 4-star hotel. The name comes naturally: The Citadel.

The MGallery La Citadelle hotel, although one of the jewels of the upscale French hotel industry, does not display a flashy luxury that would not suit military architecture. A sober and tasteful elegance reigns within the thick walls. Serenity is also the order of the day between its walls which once protected precious goods!

When the EBENIS company of the Serin family became the sole shareholder of the La Citadelle group, major renovations were undertaken. Light enters the lobby and works of street art add touches of color. Works that will also be put on sale in order to support humanitarian works.

In the spacious rooms, charcoal gray and pearl gray tones, far from being harsh, create a soothing atmosphere, comfortable bedding ensuring a restful sleep. Quite simply, it feels good, sheltered by the thick walls.

The rooms overlook the trees in Square Giraud, or the Arsenal, the Templar Chapel and its garden. The hotel is ideally located near the historic and cultural heart of Metz. You can safely leave the car in the garage to go and visit the city and its different neighborhoods with different architecture: French, Italian, German, the cathedral which celebrates its 800th anniversary, the Center Pompidou or discover Metz by the water ways.

La Citadelle's first destination - a pantry to feed the king's valiant soldiers - comes back to life in the excellent restaurant, La Réserve. Cleverly designed lighting, blond oak floors and white walls highlight the blond stone of the magnificent centuries-old vaults. One-to-one tables, alcoves and round tables invite you to take the time to taste the excellent cuisine of Aurélien Person.
