Cuvée des Dieux - a red Cabardes

The “Cuvée des Dieux” lives up to its name. Despite its deep ruby colour, very intense and complex nose of ripe red fruits and spices, it is a surprisingly elegant wine. The palate is dense with powerful but velvety, silky tannins. We find the complexity due to the spices and fruit notes. Is it because the estate has been in female hands for several generations?

The Cuvée des Dieux (a blend of 5 grape varieties from old vines) goes well with lamb or veal dishes. It should be decanted.

Its beautiful complexity is due to the particularity of the terroir planted with Syrah, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache and Malbec: the first two are Languedoc grape varieties, the other three from Bordeaux. This “marriage” which is explained by the situation of the vineyard of the Cabardès appellation, on the southern and cool slopes of the Montagne Noire north of Carcassonne, a little at the crossroads between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. With 550 ha, it is one of the smallest in the Languedoc AOP (and only for reds and rosés). Anne Marandon-Maurel and her husband have been working their vines (70 ha) in sustainable agriculture for 25 years. “The 2013 whites are organic, the reds will follow, explains Anne Maurel. “The work will be even more specialized because only preventive.
The estate also produces rosés and whites (Sauvignon, Viognier, etc.) as well as a rare natural sweet wine Grenache.
